Department of State

Department of State (DOS), Bureau of Consular Affairs
The Bureau of Consular Affairs administers laws, regulations and policies to US Embassies and Consulates worldwide regarding services to US citizens abroad such as citizenship and nationality issues, notarization of documents, international parental child abduction and international adoptions.

Immigration and Naturalization Service
The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) is the organization charged with the enforcement of US immigration laws inside the US borders.

Office of the Attorney General
The Attorney General heads the Department of Justice and is charged with the administration and enforcement of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 (INA).

Immigration Courts

Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR)
The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) has been delegated certain authority by the Attorney General to interpret immigration laws and conduct administrative hearings and appellate reviews. The EOIR is completely independent of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the Office of Special Counsel for Unfair Immigration-Related Employment Practices (Civil Rights Division)and consists of the following:

  • Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA)
  • Office of the Chief Administrative Hearing Officer (OCAHO)
  • Office of the Associate Director (OAD)
  • Board of Immigration Appeals Precedent Decisions
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation
  • The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the principal investigative arm of the United States Department of Justice and has authority and responsibility to investigate over 200 categories of federal crimes.
